Michael was known to be a private individual who preferred a transient lifestyle, often finding solace in camping within wooded areas. His preferred mode of travel was walking, and he was known to undertake long journeys on foot. The day he was last seen, Thunder Bay Police had responded to a call about a man camping on private property. Upon their arrival, they found Michael, who explained he was unaware he was on private land. He was cooperative, cleaned up his campsite, and packed his belongings. Police offered him a ride, which he politely declined before walking away. His family had last had contact with him on April 8, 2007, and he was officially reported as a missing person on May 3, 2007, by his concerned family. At the time of his disappearance, Michael was facing personal challenges and dealing with mental health issues, including depression, following the recent end of his marriage. Despite these struggles, his mother, Gail, stated that it was unusual for him to completely lose contact with his family, as he would typically reach out to them for support. In the years that have followed, the search for Michael Bailey has been fraught with uncertainty. Numerous tips and potential sightings have been reported to the Thunder Bay Police, but none have been confirmed to be him. The family has extended their search efforts, even looking as far as Toronto based on a reported sighting. His mother describes the agonizing experience of constantly searching for his face in every crowd. Lakehead Search and Rescue also conducted a search of the wooded areas near his family's rural home. Despite the passage of time, his family holds onto the hope that he may still be alive.
