Albert Vernon Kling, a 56-year-old World War II veteran, was last seen on July 3, 1979, in Lavista, Nebraska. At the time of his disappearance, Kling was described as being 6 feet 5 inches tall and weighing approximately 170 pounds. He had graying hair and hazel eyes. When last seen by his family, he was reportedly upset.
On the day he went missing, Kling was wearing a white shirt, green uniform pants, a tie, and brown shoes.
He also had several personal items with him, including a Timex watch with an expansion bracelet, brown plastic-framed glasses, a small pocket knife, a set of keys on a ring with two additional single keys, and a black billfold.
Accounts from the time suggest that Kling may have been hitchhiking from his daughter's residence in Fort Calhoun with the intention of traveling to Omaha to purchase alcohol and visit an ex-girlfriend. Despite this, the circumstances surrounding his disappearance led investigators to suspect that foul play might have been a factor from the early stages of the investigation. The original case file was archived and not digitized for many years. Albert Kling was legally declared dead in 1986.
