On an evening in April 2017, the life of 27-year-old Whalen Johnson-Gurley was tragically cut short in the Stapleton neighborhood of Staten Island, New York. On April 4th, at approximately 10:50 p.m., he was outside an auto shop on Broad Street with his girlfriend when he was shot in the torso. Emergency services were called, and he was quickly taken to Richmond University Medical Center for treatment. Despite the efforts of medical staff, his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced deceased. The investigation into what happened moved forward swiftly, primarily due to the account of his girlfriend who was present at the time of the shooting. She was able to provide a description of the person who allegedly shot him, which led police to identify a person of interest. Within a couple of days of the incident, an arrest was made. The individual taken into custody was a 25-year-old man with a prior criminal record. The suspect was subsequently charged with murder and the use of a stolen gun. While in custody at the 120th Precinct stationhouse, he reportedly caused damage to property, resulting in an additional charge. Although an arrest was made, the specific motive for the shooting was not immediately released by investigators.
