Dunphy is described as a white male, standing 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing approximately 210 pounds, with green eyes and gray hair.
He is a retiree, having worked for 35 years as the mechanical superintendent at the Bangor Daily News. When last seen, he was believed to be wearing a black Carhartt jacket and a blue cap.
The investigation into Dunphy's whereabouts has involved multiple law enforcement agencies. Initially handled by the Hampden Police Department, the Maine State Police were requested to assist with the investigation on January 16. In early February, due to the case's complexity, the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-North assumed the lead role in the investigation, with the Hampden Police Department continuing to provide support. Investigators have conducted searches on Dunphy's property located on Kennebec Road in Hampden with the assistance of the Maine Warden Service. While officials have stated it is an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to public safety, they have not confirmed if any crime has occurred.
A significant development in the case was the recovery of Dunphy's white Ford Econoline van. While the vehicle has been located, law enforcement has not released details regarding when or where it was found. As of early February 2026, Dunphy had not been located.
