In the small town of Elliston, Virginia, a sense of unease settled over the community when 44-year-old Crystal Hannah was reported missing on Sunday, June 5, 2022. Known to her friends and family as a kind, trusting, and dependable mother and grandmother, her sudden disappearance was entirely out of character, sparking immediate concern. The last communication anyone had from her was a text message to her boss indicating she was on her way to work, a destination she tragically never reached. This unsettling silence prompted a friend to contact the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, setting in motion an investigation that would soon uncover a heartbreaking truth. As investigators delved into Crystal's life, their focus quickly turned to her ex-boyfriend, James Hunter Stallard. In the initial hours of the investigation, Stallard claimed he had not seen or heard from Crystal in a few days. However, his story soon changed. In a subsequent conversation with law enforcement, he made a chilling confession, admitting that Crystal was deceased. Stallard recounted a heated argument that had escalated to a physical confrontation, ending with him strangling her. He then led investigators to a wooded area off Northfolk Road, where he had concealed her body under a covering of leaves. The discovery of Crystal's remains brought a devastating conclusion to the search, and the case transitioned from a missing person investigation to a homicide case. James Stallard was arrested and initially charged with second-degree murder and concealing a dead body. The charge was later upgraded to first-degree murder. The investigation revealed that the conflict began after Stallard went through Crystal's phone and found messages she had exchanged with another man. In August 2023, following a trial in the Montgomery County Circuit Court, a jury found James Hunter Stallard guilty of first-degree murder. The tragic overview of this case is that a mother's life was cut short due to an act of domestic violence, leaving behind a grieving family and a community shaken by the loss. The investigation, aided by a crucial confession, swiftly brought the person responsible to justice.
