Virginia Wood, a 19-year-old college student, vanished in March 2007 while on a spring break trip to visit a friend in Brownsville, Texas. Originally from Chocowinity, North Carolina, Wood was a freshman at Appalachian State University studying accounting and was on the Dean's List. She drove her black 2003 Nissan Sentra on a 1,400-mile trip to meet her high school friend, Kelly Gaskins.
Wood had taken her social security card and a copy of her birth certificate with her for a planned trip to Mexico with Gaskins.
Wood spoke with her mother twice after arriving in Brownsville, confirming she had met up with Gaskins. On March 10, 2007, she called a friend and mentioned that she and Gaskins were planning to travel to Cancun, Mexico. This was the last time anyone is known to have heard from her. After this phone call, attempts to contact Wood went directly to voicemail. Her mother reported her missing on March 19, 2007, when she failed to return to her college classes.
Wood disappeared along with Kelly Gaskins and Gaskins's boyfriend, Ervin Braxton Williams. Gaskins and Williams had left North Carolina in December 2006, telling their families they were seeking employment in Brownsville. The last contact Gaskins's family had with her was a phone call on January 15, 2007, from Matamoros, Mexico, where she said she and Williams were working at an inn. Both Gaskins and Williams were wanted by police for unrelated offenses at the time of the disappearances. Williams had outstanding warrants for charges including arson, burglary, and drug possession. Authorities believe Wood may have information about the whereabouts of Gaskins and Williams. Wood's vehicle, a black 2003 Nissan Sentra with North Carolina license plate number TTZ-6801, has never been located.Last Seen: Mar 20, 2007
