In the summer of 2020, a young woman named Mariela Adela Lopez Escalante, known affectionately as Masiela, vanished from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area. At the tender age of 18, the Hispanic female was last seen around July 18 or July 19 of that year. Masiela was a petite young woman, standing at 4'9" and weighing between 95 and 100 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. Her disappearance originated from a foster care home in Mt. Lebanon, a suburb of Pittsburgh. The days surrounding her disappearance are shrouded in uncertainty, with very few details available to the public about the specific circumstances of the last time she was seen. Masiela had a journey that brought her to the United States as an immigrant when she was 17 years old. At the time she went missing, she was considered a ward of the state. She has several distinct tattoos that her loved ones hope might help identify her: a butterfly on her lower back, two hearts on her left wrist, and a moon and stars on the back of her neck. Her ears are also pierced. In the time since she was last seen, there has been no contact from her; no calls, no messages, and her phone has been turned off, deepening the mystery and the concern for her well-being. The Mount Lebanon Police Department is handling the investigation into Masiela's disappearance. Despite the passage of time, her case remains open, but there is a notable lack of public information regarding any potential leads or persons of interest. The circumstances of her case are a somber reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by young people, particularly those within the foster care system. The overview of this case is one of a sudden and silent disappearance; an 18-year-old girl who came to a new country, only to vanish from a foster home without a trace, leaving behind a case with scant details and a community searching for answers.
