In the community of Portsmouth, Virginia, concern grew for the well-being of Katrice McDougal, a 12-year-old girl who was reported missing on a Thursday afternoon in February. She was last seen in the vicinity of Afton Square, an area near the Cradock section of the city. At the time she went missing, she was described as being close to five feet tall and weighing around 100 pounds, with her hair in a short afro that might have been styled in an updo using green shoestrings. The clothing she was wearing was specific: a black and pink Nickelodeon jacket that had a fur hood, dark jeans with a paint splatter pattern, a red shirt that tied in the front with white lettering, and white Nike shoes. She was also carrying a black book bag distinguished by its yellow straps. A few months later, in June, the Portsmouth community was once again alerted that the young girl was missing. On this occasion, 12-year-old Katrice was last seen on a Friday evening at approximately 5 p.m. near the 600 block of Dinwiddie Street. The description provided at this time noted that her hairstyle was a short afro. She was believed to be wearing ripped jeans and a dark-colored hoodie. Her height was again noted as being around 5 feet, with a weight of about 100 pounds. The repeated alerts for her disappearance caused distress and prompted community response to help locate the child. In both instances that caused public concern, the situation was resolved with relief. Following the February disappearance, an update was issued that Katrice McDougal had been safely located. Similarly, after she was reported missing in June, an update the following Saturday afternoon confirmed that police had found her safe and sound. These cases involved a young girl from the Portsmouth area being reported missing on separate occasions. The circumstances of her disappearances prompted public alerts with detailed descriptions of her appearance and clothing to aid in the search. Each case concluded positively with her being found safely, bringing an end to the community's immediate concern for her welfare.
