On August 10, 1976, 20-year-old Celeste Wyma Hensley Greub was hiking with two female friends in the Cloud Peak Wilderness of the Bighorn Mountains in Johnson County, Wyoming. The group was near the trailhead for Cloud Peak when Greub, feeling tired, decided to stay behind and rest while her friends continued the climb. When her companions returned at approximately 5:00 p.m., Greub was gone. She had no supplies with her, only some candy.
At the time of her disappearance, Greub was a resident of Casper, Wyoming.
An extensive search operation was launched, involving between 200 and 300 people, bloodhounds, helicopters, and volunteers on horseback. The search covered roughly eighty square miles of the rugged terrain but yielded no trace of Greub. After two weeks of fruitless efforts, the official search was called off. The day after her disappearance, on August 11, a group of hikers reported seeing a woman who matched Greub's description walking toward an unnamed lake between Misty Moon Lake and Gunboat Lake near Florence Pass; however, they were too far away to make a positive identification or call out to her.
At the time of her disappearance, there was speculation that Greub may have left of her own accord due to marital problems. However, her family disputed these claims, stating that she was excited about the hiking trip and had been actively involved in its planning.
