Steven Thell Koecher, a 30-year-old man from St. George, Utah, mysteriously vanished on December 13, 2009, after driving into a residential neighborhood in Henderson, Nevada. His disappearance, marked by perplexing movements in the days prior and a cryptic final sighting, has left his family and investigators with few answers.
In the days leading up to his disappearance, Koecher, who was facing financial difficulties and struggling to find stable employment, engaged in extensive and
seemingly aimless road trips. On December 10, 2009, he drove over 1,100 miles, traveling to northern Nevada to visit the parents of an ex-girlfriend before returning to St. George. Then, on December 12, he was in the area of Overton and Mesquite, Nevada, before returning to St. George later that evening to purchase Christmas gifts. The purpose of these lengthy drives remains unknown. On the morning of December 13, he spoke with two friends on the phone, telling them he was in Las Vegas. He offered to drive back to St. George to cover a church meeting for one of them, but was told it wasn't necessary.
The last known sighting of Steven Koecher was captured on a home security camera in the Sun City Anthem, a retirement community in Henderson, Nevada, around noon on December 13, 2009. The footage shows his white 2003 Chevrolet Cavalier parking at the end of a cul-de-sac on Savannah Springs Avenue. A few minutes later, a man believed to be Koecher is seen walking away from the car, carrying what appeared to be a folder or portfolio. He walked purposefully down the sidewalk, crossed the street, and disappeared from the camera's view.
Koecher's car was found abandoned in the same spot on December 14. Inside the vehicle were his shaving kit, blankets, coats, and the Christmas gifts he had recently purchased; however, his wallet, driver's license, and cell phone were missing. His laptop and phone charger were later found at his apartment in St. George. The car had half a tank of gas and was in working order.
In the hours and days following his last sighting, Koecher's cell phone continued to emit signals from various locations in the Las Vegas area. At 5 p.m. on December 13, it pinged a tower more than 10 miles from where his car was parked. Two hours later, another ping was recorded a couple of miles further north. Early the next morning, someone checked Koecher's voicemail, and the phone's signal was detected near U.S. 95 and Russell Road, where it remained for two days before the signal was lost, presumably due to the battery dying.
Despite extensive searches of the surrounding desert and residential areas by law enforcement and private search groups, no trace of Koecher has ever been found. Investigators have explored various theories, including the possibility that he was in Henderson for a job interview, that he met with foul play, or that he chose to disappear. Early in the investigation, a theory connecting his disappearance to that of Susan Powell, who vanished from Utah a week earlier, was explored but quickly dismissed due to a lack of evidence.
