On April 9, 2005, 51-year-old John Edward Zimmerman II, along with 17-year-old Austin Childs and 41-year-old David Keller, departed from Freeport, Texas, for a fishing trip in the Gulf of Mexico. The three men, all from Houston, were on Zimmerman's 28-foot pleasure craft and were accompanied by a yellow Labrador Retriever. They were expected to return the following day, April 10, 2005, but they never came back and have not been heard from since.
