Piela, a graduate of the Maritime Institute of Technology in Szczecin, Poland, had requested permission to go ashore but was denied. Shortly after this refusal, he jumped overboard into the water. At the time, the vessel was approximately 70 yards from the shore.
The initial investigation into Piela's disappearance leaned towards the theory of suicide. However, this conclusion was strongly contested by his family. They described him as an excellent swimmer with no history of suicidal behavior, emphasizing his zest for life.
