On November 27, 2010, 36-year-old Luis Manuel Hernandez of San Marcos, Texas, disappeared along with four other individuals. He was accompanied by Carlos Ortega-Gonzales, Nicholas Munoz, Ricardo Gomez, and Ricardo's 14-year-old nephew, Jiovany Gomez. The group was last seen in a green 2003 Chevrolet Suburban bearing the Texas license plate number AD98575. While the four adults were residents of the San Marcos area, Jiovany was visiting from his home in Chicago, Illinois.
Hernandez and Jiovany are American citizens, and the other three men are Mexican-born legal residents of the United States.
The group had traveled to the border city of Laredo, Texas, with the intention of handling some paperwork for a vehicle. They then made the decision to cross the border into Nuevo Laredo, Mexico, for shopping. At approximately 12:00 p.m., Hernandez placed a call to his wife, informing her that they anticipated being back in San Marcos between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m. that evening. However, the group never arrived home as expected.
Concerns for their well-being grew, and on November 30, law enforcement was alerted after Hernandez and Munoz, both described as dependable employees, failed to report for their jobs at Heldenfels Enterprises Inc., a concrete company. The circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the five individuals remain unclear. Although some agencies have classified Jiovany Gomez as a runaway, foul play is considered a possibility in all five cases. It is believed that the men and the teenager may still be in Mexico.
