In the summer of 2008, the life of 55-year-old Mattie B. Wilson took an unexpected and tragic turn. A mother of two and a grandmother to nine, Mattie had a history of being a dedicated secretary for the Memphis City Council. However, her health had taken a serious downturn after suffering a second stroke, which left her with slurred speech, a limp, and potential memory loss. Following a three-week stay at the Regional Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee, her family was in the process of securing a place for her in a nursing home to ensure she would receive the care she needed. It was on July 30, 2008, that Mattie was last seen, a day that would mark the beginning of a long and painful mystery for her loved ones. Unbeknownst to her family, Mattie was discharged from the hospital and taken to the Restoration House, a homeless shelter located in the Frayser section of Memphis. Her family had not been notified of her release from the hospital or her placement in the shelter. Within just an hour of her arrival at the facility, before her intake paperwork could even be fully processed, Mattie reportedly went outside to smoke a cigarette. She was wearing a simple outfit of a white t-shirt and blue jeans. This was the last time anyone is known to have seen her. She never returned inside and seemingly vanished without a trace. The circumstances surrounding Mattie's disappearance are particularly distressing due to her vulnerable state. Having recently experienced a significant health crisis, her disorientation and memory issues were a major concern. The subsequent investigation into her disappearance has yielded very little information, and there have been no significant leads to indicate what may have happened to her after she walked out of the shelter. The case has received minimal media attention, a painful reality for her family who continues to await answers.
