Derrick Jai Curry, a 20-year-old Black male, was last seen in Warrenville, South Carolina, on May 1, 2019. He was in the vicinity of the Minit Shop on Augusta Road around 2:00 p.m. that day and has not been heard from since. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as having black hair and brown eyes. A notable distinguishing feature is a half-sleeve black ink tattoo on his forearm. His height and weight at the time he went missing are unknown.
The circumstances surrounding his disappearance quickly led investigators to suspect foul play.
The investigation into Derrick's disappearance progressed rapidly, and within the same month he went missing, four individuals were arrested in connection with his case. Authorities came to believe that he was shot and killed inside a residence in Aiken, South Carolina. The suspects were identified as Denzell Deshawn Jackson, Sha'Kel Rakeem Dixon, Christian Barnwell, and Altashuan Jalen Bacon. The charges brought against them were severe, including murder, kidnapping, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime for Jackson and Dixon. Barnwell and Bacon faced charges of being accessories to the felony.
During legal proceedings, testimony revealed a grim account of Derrick's last moments. Witnesses stated that Jackson shot Derrick and that both Jackson and Dixon were involved in placing his body into a storage container and moving it into a vehicle. In August 2021, a jury found Denzell Deshawn Jackson and Sha'Kel Rakeem Dixon guilty of murder, kidnapping, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, resulting in life sentences for both. Christian Barnwell later pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder and was sentenced to eight years in prison. Altashuan Jalen Bacon was also charged in connection to the murder.
