On a cold December evening in 2016, Suzanne Fleming, her husband John, and their two sons, Jack and Andrew, were returning home to the Columbus, Ohio area after an exciting evening in Cleveland. They had attended a Cleveland Cavaliers basketball game, a happy family outing that would tragically become their last. Accompanying the Fleming family on this trip were a close family friend, Brian Casey, and his daughter, Megan. John Fleming, an experienced pilot and the CEO of a Columbus-based beverage company, was flying his private plane, a Cessna Citation 525, from Burke Lakefront Airport in Cleveland to The Ohio State University airport in Columbus, where the aircraft was housed. The mood was likely joyful and filled with the lingering excitement of the game as they took off into the night sky over Lake Erie. The flight was tragically short-lived. Just a few minutes after takeoff, approximately two miles north of the airport, the plane vanished from radar. An extensive search and rescue operation was immediately launched by the Coast Guard, but initially, no debris or signs of the aircraft were found. The families and community were left in a state of shock and disbelief, anxiously awaiting any news. The days that followed were filled with a heart-wrenching search in the frigid waters of Lake Erie. Eventually, debris from the aircraft was located, confirming the devastating crash. The remains of John Fleming, his son Jack, and Brian Casey were recovered, but tragically, Suzanne, her son Andrew, and Megan Casey were never found. The National Transportation Safety Board conducted a thorough investigation into the crash and concluded that the probable cause was "pilot spatial disorientation" and pilot fatigue. It is believed that John Fleming became disoriented in the dark, nighttime conditions over the lake, leading to the fatal crash. Suzanne was a graduate of Youngstown State University with a degree in social work and was a dedicated supporter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She and her husband were high school sweethearts and had built a loving family together. The loss of the Fleming and Casey families was a profound tragedy that deeply impacted their communities. The case is now considered closed, with the unrecovered individuals presumed to have perished in the crash. The overview of this case is a somber reminder of the fragility of life and how a joyous family outing can turn into an unimaginable tragedy in a matter of moments.
