In the early morning hours of November 9, 2007, 24-year-old Kyle Fleischmann vanished from the uptown area of Charlotte, North Carolina. A recent graduate of Elon University, Kyle was building a promising life for himself with a new job as a recruitment executive and a new condo. The evening before his disappearance, Kyle had been in high spirits, treating his mother, who was about to undergo surgery for breast cancer, to a Dane Cook comedy show along with his sister and best friend, Dan.
After the show, the group of friends went to the Buckhead Saloon for drinks. As the night wore on, Kyle's friends began to leave, but he decided to stay longer. Surveillance cameras last captured him leaving the bar alone at approximately 2:20 a.m., stepping out into the chilly November night without the coat and debit card he had left behind.
After leaving the saloon, Kyle's movements became a sequence of fragmented sightings and a series of unanswered phone calls. He was seen on surveillance footage walking down the street toward Fuel Pizza, which was a short distance from the bar. An employee at the pizza restaurant later told police that a man matching Kyle's description came in alone and ordered two slices of pizza. Shortly after this, Kyle began making a number of calls from his cell phone. In the span of just over an hour, between approximately 2:19 a.m. and 3:29 a.m., he called his sister, his father multiple times, his best friend, and his roommate. None of the calls were answered, and he left no voicemails; each call was only a few seconds long. His phone activity ceased after these calls, and he has not been seen or heard from since.
The search for Kyle began when he failed to show up for work later that day. His family, deeply concerned, contacted the police and hired a private investigator to aid in the search. The investigation that followed involved extensive searches by law enforcement and canine units. Search dogs reportedly followed Kyle's scent from the area of the pizza restaurant to Cordelia Park, a location known for crime, and then to a nearby construction site. Despite meticulous searches of the area, no physical evidence or any trace of Kyle was ever discovered. His family has expressed their belief that he may have been the victim of a robbery that turned fatal, and they fear his body may have been left at the construction site which has since been developed. Over the years, numerous theories have emerged, but without any conclusive evidence, the case has grown cold.
