In the early morning hours of November 9, 2007, a 24-year-old man named Kyle Fleischmann vanished after a night out in Charlotte, North Carolina. That evening, Kyle, a recent Elon University graduate, had attended a comedy show with friends before they all went to the Buckhead Saloon. As the night wore on, his friends began to leave, but Kyle opted to stay. Surveillance footage shows him leaving the bar alone at approximately 2:20 a.m.
He was dressed in a dark short-sleeved shirt and jeans, having left his coat and debit card behind at the saloon. It is believed he was carrying his wallet, keys, and a small amount of cash.
Following his departure from the bar, Kyle's movements became traceable for a short time through surveillance cameras and his cell phone activity. He was seen on video walking on College Street, in the direction of a nearby Fuel Pizza. An employee at the pizza restaurant later reported that a man matching Kyle's description came in alone around 2:30 a.m., ordered two slices of pizza, and used the restroom. Over the next hour, a series of calls were made from Kyle's phone to his sister, father, best friend, and roommate, none of which were answered. The final call was placed at 3:29 a.m. to his roommate, lasting only six seconds. By 4:00 a.m., his phone appeared to be turned off or had lost power.
The investigation into Kyle's disappearance has spanned many years, yet yielded no definitive answers. Extensive searches were conducted in the days and weeks following his disappearance, with canine units tracking his scent to an area in the NoDa neighborhood that was under construction at the time. This led his parents to believe he may have been the victim of a robbery that turned violent, and that his body was possibly left at the construction site. Despite the family hiring a private investigator and the case remaining open with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, no significant evidence has ever been uncovered.
