On a spring evening, May 10, 1941, 36-year-old Lelia Lewis Bryan and her young four-year-old daughter, Mary Rachel, vanished from their home in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. The mother and daughter reportedly left their residence on Raleigh Avenue around 9:00 p.m. in a black 1935 Ford Model A coupe. According to Lelia's husband, Edis Clarence 'E.C.'
