In March of 2003, a woman from Edinburgh, Scotland named Rosemary Cosgrove traveled to New York City with the intention of seeing the St. Patrick's Day parade. Her family had expressed concerns about this trip because she was living with Pick's disease, a rare form of dementia. Despite their worries, Rosemary made the journey, arriving at Newark International Airport on March 13, 2003. That same day, she checked into the Belvedere Hotel in Newark, New Jersey, but unfortunately also lost her travel bag which contained her passport and plane ticket. During her stay, those who interacted with Rosemary described her as being confused, a state likely attributable to her medical condition. She reportedly had difficulty remembering the name of her hotel and at one point, mistakenly walked into the wrong one. Her plan for March 18, 2003, was to go to the airport to report her lost bag. She was last seen leaving the Belvedere Hotel on that day, but she never made it to the airport and was not seen or heard from again. When she failed to return to Scotland on her scheduled flight on March 21, her family officially reported her as a missing person. The investigation into Rosemary's disappearance uncovered a few perplexing details, but ultimately no clear answers as to her fate. The credit card she had been using to pay for her hotel was never used after she vanished, and there was no further activity on her bank account. She was believed to have had about $600 in cash with her. While some of her belongings were found left in her hotel room, they offered no clues to her whereabouts. In a strange turn of events, about eight months after she disappeared, the British embassy in Washington D.C. mailed her passport back to her family, though it remains unclear who found it or how it came to be in the embassy's possession. Authorities have stated that they do not suspect foul play in her disappearance. The overview of the case is that Rosemary Cosgrove, a vulnerable adult due to a pre-existing medical condition, vanished while traveling alone in a foreign city. Her family has been left to wonder whether she may be homeless or has since passed away.
