Nicholas Washburn, a 26-year-old man from Claremont, New Hampshire, vanished on the evening of April 10, 2015, following a domestic violence incident. At approximately 9:00 p.m., police were called to a residence on Block Avenue in response to a "serious domestic violence assault," but Washburn, who was a suspect in the incident, had already left the scene before they arrived. He was last seen wearing a red shirt, black pants or shorts, and red and black shoes.
Washburn had distinguishing features, including pierced ears and a scar on his chin.
Shortly after leaving the residence, Washburn's 2007 Ford Fusion crashed into the guardrails of the Main Street Bridge, which spans the Connecticut River and connects Claremont, New Hampshire, to Ascutney, Vermont. Authorities have stated that the crash appeared to be intentional. Inside the totaled vehicle, investigators found Washburn's wallet and three cellular phones, but there was no sign of the driver. No witnesses reported seeing anyone flee the accident scene. In a poignant detail later shared by his mother, Joann Davis, she was on the phone with him at the moment of the crash and reported that he sounded panicked.
In the wake of the crash and his disappearance, extensive searches were conducted to locate Washburn. Family, friends, and New Hampshire Fish and Game personnel scoured the area around the Connecticut River multiple times. Despite these efforts, no indications of his whereabouts were ever found. The Claremont Police Department investigated his disappearance and had active arrest warrants for Washburn related to the domestic violence incident on the night he went missing. It was also reported that he had a prior history of eluding police after a domestic violence incident in 2010. His family and friends offered a $500 reward for information leading to his location.
The case of Nicholas Washburn has grown cold over the years, and his disappearance remains unsolved. The circumstances of that night, including the domestic dispute, the intentional nature of the crash, and the abandoned personal effects, have left his family with unanswered questions. The Claremont Police Chief, Alex Scott, noted that they had received calls about the case from various states, but none of the leads proved credible.
