In December of 2010, a young man named Lewis Andrew Mills, originally from Georgia, was in Patterson, Louisiana, working a construction job. At just 24 years old, he had his whole life ahead of him, including a five-year-old daughter waiting for him back home. On December 20th, he was seen on the Calumet Bridge, a sighting that would tragically be the last. Eyewitnesses later recounted a harrowing scene, stating they saw him walking along the rail of the bridge before he slipped and fell into the cold waters of the Wax Lake Outlet of the Calumet River. The shock of the fall was immediate, and the situation quickly turned dire. The moments after Lewis entered the water were frantic. Those who saw the incident unfold were aware that he was in grave danger, as it was known that he could not swim. The currents in the river are strong, and without the ability to stay afloat, he disappeared beneath the surface with alarming speed. A search was undoubtedly launched to find him, but the river was unforgiving. Despite the efforts of rescuers, they were unable to locate him in the murky depths. His body was never recovered from the Wax Lake Outlet, leaving a painful void for his family and friends. Due to the circumstances witnessed by those on the Calumet Bridge that day, Lewis is presumed to have drowned. His case is classified as a lost or injured missing person. Lewis was a white male with brown hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'10" and weighing around 125 pounds at the time of his disappearance. He had a distinctive tattoo of letters in black ink on his neck. When he was last seen, he was wearing a white button-down shirt, pants, and white sneakers. The St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office is the investigating agency in this heartbreaking case, which serves as a somber reminder of how quickly a life can be lost.
