The circumstances surrounding his disappearance were unclear, leaving his loved ones to grapple with the unknown.
Approximately two weeks after he was last seen, a significant development in the case emerged when Lushbough's van was discovered abandoned. The vehicle was found in a field on Arizona Road, near the Neosho County line, about five miles from the location of the campsite he had left. An examination of the van revealed that it had a flat tire and was low on gasoline. Despite this discovery, there was still no sign of Lushbough himself. Extensive searches were conducted in the vast rural landscape of southern Allen County, but the search for answers proved to be elusive. For over five years, the case remained cold, and the question of what happened to Dennis Lushbough Jr. lingered unanswered.
Regrettably, the long and painful mystery of Dennis Lushbough Jr.'s disappearance came to a close in the spring of 2023. On March 18, 2023, human remains were discovered east of Humboldt, near Arizona Road and 1800 Street, by an individual searching for antler sheds. This location was approximately one mile from where Lushbough's van had been found years earlier. Through forensic examination, the remains were positively identified as those of Dennis Ray Lushbough Jr. Authorities notified his family in October of 2023, finally providing them with an answer, though a heartbreaking one. While the cause of death remains unknown, authorities have stated that foul play is not suspected. The case of Dennis Ray Lushbough Jr. is a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the enduring pain of not knowing, a pain his family carried for more than half a decade.
