The stolen vehicle was found abandoned in Compton, California, less than two weeks later. Jimmy Hopkins returned to Missouri in the spring or summer of 1996 without Jessica. Over the years, Hopkins allegedly told several people that he had murdered Jessica. In April 2008, Hopkins killed his wife and then himself, taking any certain knowledge of Jessica's fate with him. He was never charged in connection with her disappearance.
