Peter Denis O'Brien, a 44-year-old audio editor for films, was last seen in Boise, Idaho, on April 2, 2009. That evening, he dropped off his two young sons at his ex-wife's residence. He was scheduled to pick them up two days later, on April 4, but never returned and has not been seen or heard from since. His disappearance is considered uncharacteristic, as he was known to be a dedicated father who adored his sons.
Authorities found O'Brien's apartment unlocked, and he had left behind nearly all of his personal belongings, including his wallet, keys, cell phone, credit cards, and car. The only notable items missing were his laptop computer and his passport. Intriguingly, his rent for April had been paid in advance.
At the time of his disappearance, O'Brien was reportedly facing both personal and financial difficulties. His relationship with his ex-wife was described as "strained," although she did not believe he was depressed. Originally from Wellington, New Zealand, O'Brien had a background that spanned several countries. He had lived in New York as a child before moving to Australia, where he graduated from the Australian Film Television and Radio School. He later moved to the United States with his family in 2000. After his marriage ended in Vermont, his ex-wife and children relocated to Boise. O'Brien himself had moved to Boise from Los Angeles just seven weeks before he vanished, with the intention of being closer to his children.
Several theories regarding his disappearance have been explored by law enforcement. Given his enjoyment of hiking, particularly in Camel's Back Park, the possibility of a hiking accident was considered. The theory of suicide was also investigated, but no evidence was found to support it. While he had taken his passport, police do not believe he left the country, as there is no record of it being used.
