Kimberly Lashawn Mack, a 27-year-old mother of four, was last seen on the evening of May 26, 2000, leaving her residence in the 8100 block of north Alaska Street in Tampa, Florida. She has not been seen or heard from since that night. Two days following her disappearance, Mack's 1990 Geo Prism was discovered abandoned in the Progress Village area, located miles from her home. The vehicle was locked, and her purse and identification were missing.
The investigation into Mack's disappearance took a turn when, within a month, an anonymous female called authorities with a tip suggesting that Mack had been harmed. Despite a public appeal from the police for the caller to come forward, it remains unknown if she ever did. Mack's family was adamant that she would never voluntarily abandon her four young children. The case grew cold as detectives initially questioned Mack's previous boyfriends but later cleared them as suspects.
A significant breakthrough in the case came in October 2007, when Mack's former boyfriend, David Eugene Lee, was charged with manslaughter in connection with her death. At the time, Lee was incarcerated in a Louisiana state prison on a drug warrant from 2000. Following a tip from Lee's brother, who informed investigators that Mack was deceased and her body was buried in a remote area of Ruskin, Tampa police detectives interviewed Lee. During the interview, Lee confessed to killing Mack. He stated that they had argued over $40,000 that he claimed she had stolen from him. In his confession, Lee admitted to putting his arm around her neck and causing her death.
As part of a plea bargain, David Eugene Lee agreed to a ten-year prison sentence for manslaughter, which would be served concurrently with his sentence for the drug charge. Despite his confession and the information he provided about the location of her body, Kimberly Lashawn Mack's remains have never been recovered. Foul play is suspected in her case due to the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and her ex-boyfriend's confession.
