Laura N. Macke, a 35-year-old experienced hiker, was last seen on October 30, 2022, in Quinault, Washington. She had traveled from Vermont to embark on a solo hiking trip in Olympic National Park, a place she chose for its challenging yet manageable trails. Her plan was to hike to the Enchanted Valley, with a backcountry permit for October 30-31 that included camping at Pyrites Creek.
Macke had indicated to her family that she might extend her trip and return on November 1, but she never made her scheduled check-in. A significant rainstorm was occurring in the area on the day she is believed to have started her hike.
Concerns for her safety grew when she failed to return, and she was officially reported missing on November 2, 2022. Her rental car, a white 2021 Kia Sportage, was found at the Graves Creek Trailhead. This discovery prompted the launch of a search and rescue operation on November 3. The initial efforts involved ground crews and a U.S. Coast Guard helicopter, but their search was hampered by severe weather conditions, including a flood warning in the area. As the days turned into more than a week with no sign of Macke, the outlook became increasingly grim. On November 10, 2022, her family announced that search and rescue crews had determined that her 'survivability is not expected.' While the active, large-scale search was suspended, officials stated that limited and continuous searching would proceed as weather and conditions allowed. Authorities asked anyone who was in the Lake Quinault, Graves Creek, or Enchanted Valley areas between October 30 and November 1 to provide any information they might have.
