William Mark Adair, a 29-year-old alarm technician from Bonita Springs, Florida, was last seen on August 31, 2008. On that day, he had gone boating off the coast of Key West. At approximately 2:30 p.m., Adair sent a text message to a family friend indicating that he was returning to shore. However, he never arrived. His truck and boat trailer were later found abandoned at the marina of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. The day of his disappearance coincided with the passage of Hurricane Ike nearby, which had led to the evacuation of the marina from which he had launched his boat.
Two weeks following his disappearance, Adair's seventeen-foot single-engine Sailfish boat was discovered overturned in a commercial fishing area. The location was more than sixty miles west of Key Largo and ten miles south of Pine Key. Despite the boat being capsized, it was found to be in good condition, leading investigators to surmise that it had overturned in the rough seas caused by the hurricane. There was no sign of Adair at the scene, and a subsequent search by the U.S. Coast Guard was suspended.
In the week leading up to his disappearance, Adair's wife had informed him that she was filing for divorce. Following this, he took three days of vacation from his job at Cintas Fire Protection in Fort Myers. He was scheduled to return to work on September 1, but he never showed up. His concerned coworkers reported him missing on September 2. The investigation into his disappearance is being handled by the police in Bonita Springs, where he resided on Jarrow Road. Although his case remains unsolved, it is presumed that William Mark Adair drowned in the storm.
