On February 18, 1998, 28-year-old Mary Ann Knightly was last seen at her residence in the 1500 block of Du Pont Highway in Bear, Delaware, at approximately 11:30 p.m.. Her husband, Roy Knightly, was the last person known to have seen her. According to Roy's statement to the police, Mary Ann packed a bag and expressed her need to "get away for awhile," informing him of her intention to visit her sister in Florida. Roy reported that he fell asleep and awoke at 1:30 a.m.
to find that she was gone. Mary Ann Knightly never reached her sister's home in Florida.
The evening of her disappearance, Mary Ann had borrowed a van from her mother, promising to return it the following day. However, it was Roy who returned the vehicle, stating that Mary Ann had requested he do so on her behalf. It remains unclear how Mary Ann had planned to travel to Florida, and the amount of money she had with her is unknown. Mary Ann's mother officially reported her missing on February 26, 1998.
Authorities have stated that Mary Ann had a history of leaving her home for periods of up to three days without informing anyone of her destination. Despite this, foul play is suspected in her disappearance. Roy Knightly was named a person of interest in his wife's case, and he was never cleared of suspicion.
