Roy Prifogle, a 52-year-old resident of Pine Cove, California, has been missing since March 4, 2020. On that day, he left his home around 1:00 p.m. to go for a hike. He was last seen at the Pine Cove Market at 6:30 p.m. that evening. Prifogle was wearing jeans and carrying a red backpack. His car was later discovered on Acorn Lane in Pine Cove, at the head of the Webster Trail.
An extensive six-day search was launched following his disappearance, involving approximately 150 people from various search and rescue teams, including the Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit and volunteers from San Bernardino, Orange, and San Diego counties. The search effort utilized air support, drones, bloodhounds, and K-9 units trained to find both living and deceased individuals. Despite the intensive search, which covered the area for eight to ten hours each day, Prifogle was not located. The search was hindered by inclement weather.
On the second or third day of the search, Prifogle's red backpack was found in the brush, far off the Webster Trail. The backpack was intact with all its pockets zipped. Inside, searchers found his phone, a fire hat, some snacks, and an empty juice bottle. An examination of the phone revealed that the last photos taken were of a creek on the day he went missing.
Prifogle was reportedly familiar with the Webster Trail, having known it since his childhood. The trail is described as strenuous and descends to the North Fork of the San Jacinto River. Several months before he vanished, Prifogle had experienced a transient ischemic attack, also known as a mini-stroke.
