Sheila Jean Baker, a 55-year-old woman, was spending the Christmas holiday with a family member in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana. On December 25, 2022, she departed with the intention of driving to her mother's home in the Lake Charles area. However, she never arrived at her destination. Concerns grew when her family was unable to make contact with her. The last time her family had seen her was on that Christmas Day.
The Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office was notified and began a missing persons investigation to ascertain her whereabouts.
The investigation into Sheila's disappearance revealed that her vehicle, a white 2008 Toyota Yaris with a distinctive black front bumper, was spotted traveling near Alexandria on Louisiana Highway 28. Authorities were also able to track her cell phone, with its last known location being near Bunkie. A significant lead in the case came from a photo capturing her car on Interstate 49 in Rapides Parish sometime during the day she went missing. Despite these pieces of information, her whereabouts remained unknown for a period of time, prompting the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office to seek assistance from the public in locating her.
Tragically, on February 12, 2023, the investigation came to a somber conclusion. Law enforcement officials in West Baton Rouge Parish discovered a vehicle at the Super Lucky Louie's truck stop in Port Allen that was linked to the missing person case. Inside the vehicle, they found a deceased individual. The body was later identified as that of Sheila Baker. The West Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office, in coordination with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office and the local coroner's office, continued the investigation into her death. While the cause of death was pending an autopsy and toxicology reports, authorities stated that foul play was not suspected.
