Peter Raymond Flores, a 50-year-old Hispanic male, went missing on June 11, 2009, in Placer County, California. He was last seen at 9:00 p.m. at the Hell Hole Reservoir, a mountainous area located approximately 65 miles east of Auburn. Flores was boating with his son and a friend when their small fishing boat capsized in the frigid waters. In an effort to get help for his two companions, Flores decided to swim to shore. He was last seen approximately 60 yards from the shore.
At the time of his disappearance, Flores was described as being 5'8" tall and weighing 180 pounds, with graying black hair and hazel eyes. He has a birthmark on his left cheek. Flores was last seen wearing a brown jacket, a brown and beige shirt, blue jeans, and a nylon necklace.
Following the incident, Flores's son and their friend were able to make it to the shore and were discovered by another boater the next morning. The Placer County Sheriff's Search and Rescue team, with assistance from the El Dorado National Forest fire crews and the Placer County Water Agency, conducted a search of the shoreline but could not locate Flores. The search effort then transitioned to a recovery mission, with marine units from Nevada and Yuba counties joining the Placer County Sheriff's Marine Unit.
Despite the use of search boats, underwater search equipment, and divers, authorities were unable to locate Flores's body. The search was ultimately suspended on the night of Saturday, June 13, 2009, due to the reservoir's rocky and rugged bottom, which made continued efforts futile. Peter Raymond Flores is presumed to have drowned, though his body has never been recovered. The Placer County Sheriff's Department is the investigating agency in his case.
