On a late summer evening, the waters off the coast of Gold Beach, Oregon, turned treacherous, leading to a tragedy that left a family and community heartbroken. On August 31, 2025, Jerrod Robert Bruner, a 42-year-old man, was aboard a 26-foot motorized catamaran with two other men, Sam Waller and Robbie Nelson. About four miles from the shore, the vessel capsized in the rough seas, throwing the men into the cold Pacific waters. A distress call was made, and a nearby private vessel operated by Merit Draven and Scott Feist was the first to arrive on the scene. They discovered Robbie Nelson clinging to the overturned hull and were able to rescue him; he was subsequently taken to a local hospital to be treated for hypothermia. However, there was no sign of Jerrod or Sam Waller in the deteriorating weather conditions, which included strong winds and high waves. An extensive search and rescue operation was immediately launched. The U.S. Coast Guard, alongside the Curry County Sheriff's Office and local volunteers, scoured more than 75 square nautical miles of the ocean. The effort involved lifeboats, helicopters, and jet skis, all battling the challenging conditions in a desperate attempt to find the two missing men. After more than a day of intensive searching, the Coast Guard made the difficult decision to suspend their active search. The focus then shifted to recovery. The capsized boat was located days later, approximately 12 miles northwest of the Port of Brookings, and towed to the harbor. On the morning of September 3, divers were able to access and search the vessel. Tragically, they recovered the body of Sam Waller from inside the boat, but Jerrod Bruner was not found. Jerrod Bruner, known affectionately as "Bone" to his friends and family, was a devoted husband and a father to two children. He was remembered as a passionate outdoorsman who loved sharing his joy for fishing, hunting, and snowmobiling with his wife and kids. His disappearance left an immense void in the lives of his loved ones and the tight-knit coastal community. Local efforts, coordinated by the Curry County Sheriff's Office, continued with shoreline patrols and aerial checks, but they yielded no signs of the missing man. The tragic incident has had a lasting impact, not only on the families directly affected but also on the wider community, prompting renewed calls for an increased Coast Guard presence in the often-perilous waters off Gold Beach. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, a story of a day of recreation that ended in profound loss, leaving a family waiting for answers.
