Sandra, who had only been in California for six months, was known for her survival skills and familiarity with the outdoors. On July 1, 2020, campers discovered an abandoned campsite near Johnson Meadows in the Sierra National Forest, above Bass Lake. The site was disorganized, with belongings such as a birth certificate and social security card scattered around. These items were later confirmed to belong to Sandra. On July 4, 2020, Sandra's car was found crashed near the campsite. Witnesses reported seeing her at the scene but noted that she declined offers of assistance and appeared to walk into the woods. She was spotted two more times by individuals who were unaware she was a missing person, but she reportedly refused help on each occasion.
The search for Sandra has been challenging due to the lack of substantial clues. The Creek Fire in September 2020 further complicated efforts by altering the terrain in the search area.
