The family of Johnny Ray Bagwell endured a long period of uncertainty after he was last seen in July 2023. Although he was not officially reported as a missing person to the Cave City Police Department until June 2024, his loved ones had not had contact with him for nearly a year. This lack of communication raised significant concern, prompting his family to seek assistance from law enforcement in hopes of locating him and ensuring his well-being.

The search for answers took a somber turn in March 2025, when possible human remains were discovered on Cougar Road in Sulphur Rock. A lieutenant with the Sharp County Sheriff's Office responded to the report and found a skull and a vertebra in a wooded area near a residence. The remains were located uphill from a creek bed that connects to Caney Creek. These initial findings were sent to the Arkansas State Crime Laboratory for analysis. Further searches of the area, which included the use of a human remains detection K-9, led to the discovery of more remains, heightening the urgency and gravity of the investigation.
In April 2025, the Arkansas State Crime Lab confirmed through DNA analysis that the remains belonged to Johnny Ray Bagwell. While this discovery brought a devastating answer to his family's questions about his whereabouts, the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. The cause and manner of his death have not been determined due to limited information. The Sharp County Sheriff's Office continues to actively investigate the case and has urged anyone with information regarding Mr. Bagwell's disappearance or death to come forward.
