The Metropolitan Police Department’s missing-person flyer listed him as missing from the 1300 block of 7th Street Northwest at about 5:00 p.m. and described him as 6 feet 1 inch tall, about 170 pounds, with black hair and dark brown eyes. He was last reported wearing black pants, a white shirt, a black jacket, and gray, burgundy, and white sneakers.
Early public alerts asked for help locating Nyair and directed anyone with information to contact D.C. police. Reporting at the time said concern had grown because he had been missing for nearly two weeks, and police circulated updated information saying he had last been seen in the area of the 1500 block of South Capitol Street Southwest. The public messaging reflected the urgency surrounding a missing teenager whose family and community were searching for answers.
Later reporting added more detail about the circumstances believed to be connected to his disappearance. FOX 5 DC reported that Nyair was last seen after fleeing from a vehicle during a police pursuit near the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge. His mother, Sharnell Ford, said she was told he ran from the passenger side of the vehicle and was last seen under the bridge. She also told FOX 5 that his phone was found in the area three days after he disappeared and that his jacket was later discovered submerged in the Anacostia River nearby.
Nyair’s mother publicly expressed deep concern about what happened to her son and sought more information from authorities. FOX 5 reported that she believed body camera footage from the night of the chase could help answer questions, and she voiced fear that foul play may have been involved. Police, according to that report, said officers had tried to stop a black Kia Sportage for a traffic violation, that the driver and passenger fled on foot, and that the passenger was believed to be Nyair. At that point in the reporting, police had not yet confirmed the identity of a body recovered from the area, and Nyair remained listed as missing.
The case was later resolved in the most tragic way. 7News reported that officials identified the body found near the Frederick Douglass Bridge as Nyair Raymond. According to that report, his body was found near the bridge on March 7, and the D.C. Chief Medical Examiner confirmed the identification on March 19. The report also stated that the cause and manner of death had not been determined.
