In the quiet community of Joyce, Washington, near Port Angeles, a sense of unease settled over the loved ones of Kevin Jay Richter, a 32-year-old man who vanished on February 10, 2022. On that Thursday morning, at approximately 10:00 a.m., Kevin told his girlfriend he was going for a ride on his mountain bike. He was last seen wearing a camouflage sweatshirt and Carhartt jeans. Concern mounted when he failed to return, and by 5:30 p.m., a family friend reported him missing, noting that he had been despondent. It was also believed that Kevin may have taken a .45 caliber pistol with him. The initial response from the Clallam County Sheriff's Office involved using cellular phone analysis to pinpoint a search area in the timberlands south of Crescent Beach Road. The day after his disappearance, a family member discovered Kevin's bicycle and cell phone off a hiking path in a wooded area between Crescent Beach Road and Highway 112/Dawley Road, roughly two and a half miles from his home. An examination of his phone's internet history revealed that he had been researching how to survive in remote areas and the best places to disappear. This discovery, coupled with atypical banking transactions before he went missing, led investigators to consider that he may have intended to leave and not be found. It was also reported that he was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of his disappearance. Due to the possibility of him being armed and in a volatile state, the official search efforts were limited and did not utilize citizen volunteers, though friends and family conducted their own searches. As the investigation continued, the Clallam County Sheriff's Office obtained search warrants for his bank records to see if there was any activity after he was reported missing. The initial belief that he may have voluntarily disappeared was re-evaluated when it was discovered there had been no transactions on his account. This prompted a renewed physical search with K-9 units in the area where his belongings were found, but tragically, no new leads emerged. Kevin Richter is described as a skilled outdoorsman. The case remains open, a painful and unresolved chapter for his family and friends. The overview of the case suggests a man in crisis who made careful preparations to vanish, leaving behind only a few clues in the dense wilderness of Washington.
