Renee Christine Arcand, a 36-year-old woman originally from Madison, Wisconsin, was reported missing on June 27, 2023, from a campsite in a remote area of eastern Montana. At the time of her disappearance, she was working at the Buffalo Gap Guest Ranch in North Dakota, which is about an hour's drive east of Glendive. She and a male companion were traveling and camping together with her two dogs.
They had set up their camp for the night at the Intake Fishing Access Site on the Yellowstone River, approximately sixteen miles north of Glendive, Montana.
The circumstances surrounding her disappearance are still unclear. Her traveling companion reported that he went to sleep in their vehicle on the night of June 27th, leaving Renee to stay up. When he awoke the following morning, Renee was gone. All of her personal belongings, including her dogs, were left behind at the campsite. There is some confusion about her dogs, with reports indicating that after her companion realized she was missing, he found the dogs in her car, and they escaped when he opened the door. One of her dogs was later found about 15 miles away from Glendive.
Immediately following her disappearance, the Dawson County Sheriff's Office launched an extensive search of the area. Search efforts involved multiple agencies and utilized various resources, including search and rescue dogs, aircraft, and infrared drones to scan the land and water. Downstream authorities were also alerted to be on the lookout. The search of the Yellowstone River was initially hampered by high and muddy water, which prevented the effective use of sonar equipment. Despite these prolonged efforts, there has been no sign of Renee. The search was suspended for the winter in November 2023 and resumed in April 2024, with teams covering miles of the Yellowstone River.
Renee Arcand is described as a white female, 5'5" to 5'6" tall, and weighing between 130 and 150 pounds. She has brown hair and hazel eyes. She has several distinctive tattoos, including the name "Muir" on the inside of her right arm, the phrase "This too will pass" on her wrist, a Gemini astrological sign on the side of her torso, and a heart with vines on her ankle. Authorities have considered the possibility that she may have fallen into the fast-flowing Yellowstone River, but with no witnesses, this remains a theory. Her case remains an active and unsolved missing person investigation.
