On a summer afternoon, June 25, 1983, four-year-old Nyleen Kay Marshall was with her family for a picnic hosted by a ham radio club in the Elkhorn Mountains of Helena National Forest, near her home in Clancy, Montana. At around 4:00 p.m., Nyleen was playing and catching frogs with other children near Maupin Creek. Some of the children later reported seeing Nyleen speaking with an unidentified man dressed in a purple jogging suit. One child recalled the man trying to get her to play a game he called "Follow the Shadow." The other children walked a short distance ahead, and when they turned back moments later, Nyleen was gone. She was last seen wearing a yellow t-shirt and shorts, with no shoes.
The moments after Nyleen's disappearance sparked what would become the most extensive search mission in Montana's history.
Her family and the other picnickers initially called out her name, but when she didn't respond, a frantic search of the immediate area began, and authorities were contacted. The subsequent official search involved more than 2,800 volunteers, law enforcement officers, helicopters with infrared sensors, and canine units. Search teams scoured the dense forest, steep terrain, and numerous abandoned mine shafts that dotted the landscape. Tracking dogs were able to follow Nyleen's scent from the creek area, but the trail ended abruptly, leading investigators to believe she had been abducted, likely taken to a vehicle. After ten days of exhaustive searching that yielded no trace of the little girl, the official effort was called off, leaving the community heartbroken and her family desperate for answers.
In the years following Nyleen’s disappearance, the case took several disturbing turns. In November 1985, a man began making anonymous phone calls to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, claiming he had abducted Nyleen. These calls were traced to phone booths in Wisconsin. In January 1986, a typewritten letter, postmarked from Madison, Wisconsin, was sent to the Child Find organization. The writer claimed he had taken a girl named "Kay," providing details about her disappearance that had not been made public. He alleged that he was raising her as his own, homeschooling her, and traveling with her throughout the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain. The letters also contained statements that authorities said indicated sexual abuse. Over the years, other leads surfaced but led to dead ends. In 1991, a man with a history of mental illness, Richard James Wilson, confessed to her murder but later recanted, and no evidence was found to support his claim. Tragically, Nyleen's mother, Nancy, was found deceased under suspicious circumstances in a hotel room in Mexico in 1995.
