On the morning of September 26, 2022, 53-year-old Phillip Wilson, a male resident of Apache Junction, Arizona, borrowed a friend's truck with the intention of going for a hike. At approximately 9:30 a.m., he signed the logbook at the First Water Trailhead within the vast and rugged Tonto National Forest, but did not specify his intended route or destination.
