In the summer of 2024, the community of Victor, New York, was struck with the unsettling disappearance of a familiar face. Reginald "Reggie" Vardon, an 83-year-old man known for his active lifestyle of walking and biking, was last seen on July 15th. On that Monday afternoon, he visited the ESL Credit Union on School Street, not for any transaction, but simply to greet the employees he knew. Security footage captured him leaving the credit union and walking north, but from that point on, his trail vanished. When the manager of his apartment complex, Autumn Grove Apartments, realized no one had seen or heard from him in two days, he was reported missing. His family, including his daughter, described him as having some cognitive decline, which added to the urgency and concern surrounding his disappearance. The search for Reggie Vardon was immediate and extensive. The Ontario County Sheriff's Office launched a significant operation, combing the area with deputies, firefighters, K9 units, and a bloodhound that started from his residence. Drones and ATVs were deployed, and later in the fall, the New York State Police Aviation Unit conducted helicopter searches hoping the bare trees would offer a better view. Despite these exhaustive efforts, which included checking his banking and phone records for any activity, no leads emerged. The case was described by the Sheriff as "extremely unusual. " His family made heartfelt public pleas for any information, and a Facebook page was created to gather tips from the community, all in the desperate hope of bringing Reggie home. The days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, with no sign of the missing elderly man, leaving his loved ones and the community in a painful state of uncertainty. Nearly a year after he was last seen, the search for Reginald Vardon came to a heartbreaking conclusion. In late May 2025, a person fishing in Mud Creek, less than a mile from Reggie's home, discovered human remains and clothing. The Monroe County Medical Examiner's Office used dental records to positively identify the remains as those of Reggie Vardon. Investigators believe a severe storm that hit the area on the day he disappeared, causing flash floods and bringing down trees, may have been a factor in his death. His remains were found under a fallen tree in a remote and densely vegetated area, which explains why previous extensive searches had been unsuccessful. While the exact cause of his death may remain undetermined due to the condition of the remains, his family expressed a bittersweet relief that he had been found and was no longer suffering. The discovery brought a somber closure to a case that had deeply affected the Victor community, ending a nearly year-long vigil with the sad confirmation of the beloved 83-year-old's passing.
