In the late hours of September 22, 2024, 31-year-old Nancy Bunly was seen for the last time in Lexington, North Carolina. A mother to a newborn child, her disappearance began after what was reported as an argument with her live-in boyfriend, Ricky Lam. She was said to have left their shared residence on Druid Hills Drive in his black 2017 Honda Pilot. Concern grew quickly for the young mother, whose family described her as a homebody dedicated to her work and, most importantly, her baby girl who was just an infant when she vanished. Her family officially reported her missing to the Lexington Police Department the following day, sparking an investigation into her sudden and uncharacteristic absence.

The initial stages of the investigation uncovered unsettling evidence. Early on, detectives had reason to believe that Nancy may have been harmed. A significant, yet troubling, discovery was made when her cell phone was found near Abbott's Creek, a location that subsequently became a primary focus for search efforts. As investigators delved deeper, suspicion began to mount around her boyfriend, Ricky Lam. The investigation involved extensive ground, aerial, and water searches throughout Lexington and the greater Piedmont Triad area as authorities tirelessly processed interviews and analyzed both physical and digital evidence to piece together the events of that night. The case took a significant turn in December 2024, when three of Ricky Lam's relatives were arrested and charged with obstruction of justice in connection with Nancy's disappearance, indicating a wider effort to conceal information from law enforcement.

A year of uncertainty and anguish for Nancy's loved ones passed before a major development brought the case into a new, heartbreaking light. A Davidson County Grand Jury issued a true bill of indictment for Ricky Lam, charging him with the first-degree murder of Nancy Bunly and concealment of a body. The charges against his three relatives were also upgraded to felony accessory after the fact to first-degree murder and concealment of a body. The news was a devastating blow to Nancy's family, who had held onto a sliver of hope that she might one day be found alive. The case against Lam grew even more complex as it was revealed he was also charged with the murder of another woman in a separate case in Guilford County. Despite the murder charges and the ongoing legal proceedings, which have been designated as a capital case in Davidson County, Nancy Bunly has never been found. The search for her continues as an active and ongoing homicide investigation, leaving a family and a community waiting for the day she can be brought home.
