On May 1, 2020, Mike Lorenzo, a 65-year-old homeless man from Hayward, California, was found unresponsive and suffering from gunshot wounds in the area of Industrial Parkway and Pacific Street. When officers attempted to apprehend him, Ramirez used the car to back into a police vehicle, prompting officers to fire their weapons. Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene, and the incident was subject to further investigation by the police department's criminal investigations bureau and internal-affairs unit.
