On a cold winter day in Sawmill, Arizona, 41-year-old Leander Nez, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, disappeared. The date was January 30, 2021, when he was last seen by his brothers. That same day, in a seemingly ordinary exchange, Leander called his sister to ask for money to buy groceries, and she sent it to him.
