In the early morning of August 23, 2024, 32-year-old Eric Boll was seen for the last time leaving his home on the east side of Madison, Wisconsin. His wife reported that he was upset when he departed on his blue Vivi e-bike around 7:00 a.m. Eric, a graduate of Brillion High School and a former student at UW Oshkosh and UW Madison, was described by his family as an intelligent man who loved the outdoors and was a talented chef.
At the time he went missing, he stood 5'11" and weighed between 165 and 180 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Concerns for his well-being grew, as he was believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis. He was officially reported missing to the Madison Police Department on September 4, 2024.
The search for Eric involved both law enforcement and concerned community members. K-9 units scoured wooded areas and farmlands near his home, but these initial efforts yielded no clues. His family pleaded with the public for help, asking residents in the Madison area to check their properties, including any outbuildings or sheds. Friends and co-workers raised a $10,000 reward for any information that would lead to finding him. Despite these efforts, weeks turned into months with no sign of Eric or his blue e-bike. His family later expressed frustration with the search process, feeling that their son's case was not treated with the urgency it deserved and that they were denied resources that could have helped locate him sooner.
Tragically, after 139 days, the search came to a devastating end. On January 9, 2025, Eric Boll's remains were discovered on the east side of Madison, less than three miles from where he was last seen. It is believed that he took his own life. While the discovery provided a painful sense of closure, his family continues to advocate for changes in how missing person cases are handled, hoping to spare other families the anguish they endured. A celebration of Eric's life was held on January 25, 2025, where he was remembered for his warm hugs and sense of humor.
