Friends and family knew her as an adventurous spirit who frequently hitchhiked.
On the day of her disappearance, Clara was reportedly seen in the area of Interstate 44 and Highway 43 in Joplin, where she got into a truck with a man who was also from Milwaukee. The last known contact anyone had with Clara was a phone call she made at approximately 11:40 a.m. from a payphone in Pittsburg, Kansas. After that call, she was never heard from again.
Clara was a distinctive young woman with blonde hair, blue eyes, and several identifying features. She wore large, light-beige framed eyeglasses and had her ears pierced. Physically, she had scoliosis, a red birthmark on her navel, and a tattoo of the name 'Jeff' on her left arm just below the elbow. When she was last seen, she was wearing a white shirt with a floral waistband, reddish-brown pants, and blue athletic shoes. She also wore a Timex watch with a blue band and a silver ring. An avid user of CB radio, she was known by the handles 'Blondie,' 'Blue Eyes,' and 'Missouri Sunshine.' Her family noted that when she embarked on her trip, she was carrying a significant amount of money and a new, expensive suede coat, both gifts from her brother.
The investigation into Clara's disappearance led authorities to identify and question the truck driver she was last seen with. Reports indicate that the man provided inconsistent statements during questioning, but investigators were unable to gather enough evidence to press charges against him or anyone else in connection with the case. Clara's mother held onto the theory that her daughter may have been robbed due to the cash and valuable coat she had in her possession. Over the years, the family continued to hope for answers. In 2011, with a heavy heart, Clara's mother held a memorial service for her daughter, accepting the likelihood that she was no longer alive. Sadly, her mother passed away in 2019 without ever learning the fate of her beloved child.
