On a spring day, May 24, 1990, 30-year-old Paige Marie Renkoski, a substitute teacher from Michigan, vanished from the side of a busy interstate. Earlier that day, around 11:30 a.m., she had driven her mother to the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Afterward, Paige visited a friend in Canton, Michigan. Between 2:30 and 2:45 p.m., she was seen at a local store purchasing a beer, an item later found in her car. The last known sighting of Paige was at approximately 3:30 p.m. on the shoulder of westbound Interstate 96, near the Fowlerville exit. Motorists reported seeing her speaking with two unidentified men standing near a maroon or burgundy minivan. Some witnesses described her as appearing distressed, at one point gesturing by throwing her hands up in the air, while one of the men placed a hand on her shoulder. Hours later, at about 7:30 p.m., a passing motorist who had seen Paige's car earlier in the day noticed it was still in the same spot and contacted the police. When law enforcement arrived, they discovered her 1986 Oldsmobile Cutlass Calais idling. The lights and radio were on, and the driver's side door was unlocked. Inside the vehicle were her purse, wallet, and shoes, along with the beer she had purchased earlier. There was no sign of a struggle or any damage to the car, which was in proper working order. Initially, the vehicle was treated as abandoned and towed, a decision that has been criticized for potentially compromising the scene. The following day, after her family reported her missing, the investigation into her disappearance began. Over the many years that have passed, the investigation into Paige Renkoski's disappearance has explored numerous leads and theories. Fingerprints and palm prints were recovered from her vehicle, but they have never been matched to anyone in law enforcement databases. The descriptions of the men and the minivan seen with Paige have varied among witnesses, leading to the creation of multiple composite sketches over time. One theory that has been considered is that someone may have impersonated a police officer to get her to pull over, which might explain why she stopped so close to an exit and left her belongings behind. Investigators have looked into several individuals, including an inmate who was in prison for a carjacking that occurred shortly after Paige vanished, though he was later cleared after passing a lie detector test. Despite thousands of tips and extensive searches, Paige's case remains unsolved and has been classified as a homicide, although her body has never been found and no one has been charged in connection with her disappearance. The case of Paige Renkoski is a haunting mystery that has left a family searching for answers for decades.
