On a summer day, July 18, 1992, 31-year-old Peggy Sue Lammon, a control operator for the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Department, embarked on what was meant to be a weekend getaway to Beaver Island in northern Lake Michigan. She was a passenger in a 1978 single-engine Cessna, piloted by her husband, Tom Lammon. Accompanying them were their friends, Ray and Cathy Sears, another couple from the Kalamazoo area. The four friends took off from an airport in Battle Creek, Michigan, around 10:30 a.m. on that Saturday, anticipating a roughly two-hour flight to the picturesque island. The initial part of their journey was under warm and sunny skies, but as the Cessna continued its northward path over the Leelanau Peninsula, the weather began to shift, with clouds gathering. As the aircraft prepared for its descent to a landing strip on Beaver Island, now about 35 miles out, it vanished from radar screens around noon. The plane's last known position was near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula, a short 20-minute flight from their destination. The disappearance triggered an extensive search effort involving state and county authorities, the Civil Air Patrol, and the U.S. Coast Guard, but no sign of the plane or its four occupants was immediately found. Weeks turned into a somber and frustrating wait for the families of the missing couples. It wasn't until August 3rd that a small aircraft tire was discovered on a beach near Good Hart, along with several pieces of fiberglass floating nearby. The color of the fiberglass matched that of the missing Cessna, and the tire was confirmed to be from an aircraft. This discovery prompted renewed and intensified search efforts by land, air, and water, but tragically, nothing more was ever found. The case of Peggy Lammon, her husband, and their friends remains an unsolved mystery, a story of a weekend trip that ended in a disappearance over the vast waters of Lake Michigan, leaving behind only questions and the enduring grief of their loved ones.
