On January 29, 1991, in Rockdale County, Georgia, a mother of two, Deborah Jean McKneely, vanished from her home in what appeared to be a violent abduction. The 39-year-old was last seen at her residence on Union Church Road. Her disappearance occurred sometime between 7:30 a.m., when her two sons left for school, and 4:45 p.m., when they returned to a disturbing scene. The boys, aged 11 and 13, discovered the back door of their home had been kicked in. They also found a broken windowpane in the garage and that the phone lines had been cut. Evidence of a struggle was apparent, with blood found inside the house and in the carport area.
The investigation into Deborah's disappearance quickly pointed away from a robbery. Despite the signs of a break-in, valuable items such as her purse, jewelry, a watch, a diamond ring, and a new computer were left untouched. The day after she went missing, her 1985 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer was found abandoned in a housing project parking lot in Decatur, roughly 20 to 25 miles from her home. Inside the vehicle, investigators found more blood. The keys had been left in the car, and cash was scattered in plain view, leading police to believe it was an attempt to bait someone into stealing the vehicle to obscure evidence. Authorities have stated their belief that at least two individuals were involved in the abduction. A white pickup truck was reportedly seen in the vicinity of her home around the time she disappeared, but its connection to the case remains unconfirmed.
At the time she went missing, Deborah was in the midst of a contentious divorce from her husband. They had been separated since November 1989, and court records indicate she had previously accused him of physical abuse. She had expressed fear for her life to her brother and a neighbor, stating she believed her husband would kill her if she tried to divorce him. The day Deborah disappeared was the same day she and her estranged husband were scheduled to finalize their divorce and property settlement at 5:00 p.m. Although he was publicly named a suspect, he has consistently denied any involvement in her disappearance. In 2001, Deborah McKneely was declared legally dead. Despite the passage of time and the re-opening of the case by a cold case investigator, her body has never been found, and the case is now classified as a homicide.
