On the afternoon of May 23, 1993, 47-year-old Dorothy Pitcher and her daughter set out on foot from their home in Sunizona, Arizona. Their destination was the RV Park Store, a three-mile walk to the corner of Highway 191 and Highway 181, to buy cigarettes for Dorothy's husband. It was a routine trip for the family. Along their way, they stopped at the home of one of Dorothy’s older daughters to invite her along, but she declined, asking them to stop by for dinner on their way back. They reached the store, purchased the cigarettes and some ice cream, and made a call from a payphone before beginning their walk home. Dorothy was last seen wearing a blue shirt and blue denim shorts. Friends driving by saw the mother and daughter walking along the highway, which was the last confirmed sighting of either of them.
The investigation into their disappearance began after they failed to return home. The Cochise County Sheriff's Office brought in search dogs, which picked up their scent from the store and followed it for about a mile and a half along their route home. The trail abruptly ended near the road, leading investigators to suspect they may have been picked up by a vehicle. All of Dorothy's personal belongings, including her purse, dentures, and eyeglasses, were left behind at her house. Investigators looked into several possibilities, including a man Dorothy had an affair with, but he had moved out of state and surveillance of his home showed no signs of the missing pair. Dorothy's husband, John Pitcher, was ruled out as a suspect after he passed two polygraph tests.
Decades later, the case of Dorothy Pitcher and her daughter remains unsolved, and their whereabouts are unknown. The case is considered a criminal murder investigation, and foul play is suspected.
